The ICE Breaker Triathlon with Super Sprint ICE Breaker Triathlon and Duathlon

The ICE Breaker Triathlon was first held in 2000 as part of the TBF Training Triathlon Class. In 2002 the event was opened to the public and is now in its 17th year, known as the best way to start your Triathlon racing season!

The Swim for the ICE Breaker Triathlon and Super Sprint Triathlon will both take place at Folsom Lake. The run courses for the ICE Breaker Triathlons and the ICE Breaker Dash Duathlon will be both a scenic and enjoyable along the beautiful shoreline of Folsom Lake.

The Ice Breaker Dash is a super sprint course perfect for first-timers. Included for each athlete is an ICE BREAKER tech-tee race shirt, swim cap, athlete goody bag, hot post race meal and free athlete massage. Awards are for 1st through 5th place in each age group/category for the ICE Breaker Triathlon and 1st through 3rd place in the Ice Breaker Dash.

Relay Teams consist of one swimmer, one cyclist and one runner. Entry fee includes three race shirts, goody bags and post race meals. Awards will be first overall in Male, Female and Coed divisions for ICE Breaker Triathlon only.


Start Times

  • ICE Breaker Dash Triathlon & Duathlon: 8 am

  • ICE Breaker Tri: Swim .5 miles – Bike 13 miles – Run 4 miles
  • Ice Breaker Dash Tri & Du:  400 yard swim or 2 mile run-6.5 mile bike-2 mile run

Swim – The race starts from the Granite Beach in Folsom Lake with a .5 mile swim from the beach area. The swim course will be a triangular course marked by the large white triangular buoys. Water temperature should be approximately 56 degrees. Wetsuits are recommended. The swim will exit the lake and head up the beach and on a grassy path to the transition area located in the parking area.

Bike – The 13-mile bike course is a TWO-LAP course located entirely within the park on roads closed to traffic. The bike course is windy and has several sharp small hills and tight turns. Athletes participating in the Super Sprint Triathlon will do ONLY one lap for the 6.5 mile bike course.

It is STRONGLY recommended that you ride the course ahead of time. Caution is advised on several of the turns as they wind through the hills and oak trees that surround Folsom Lake. After the second loop you will return into the transition area. Course maps will be available on race morning at Registration. The Bike course will Not have an aid station. Water and Clif Electrolyte Beverage, along with Clif Shot Energy gels will be available in the transition area.

Run – The 4-mile run course leaves transition and runs on single-track trails along the lake back towards Beal’s Point. The out and back course has 3 aid stations that will be stocked with water, Clif Beverage, and Clif Shot Energy gels. The finish is back at the start area at the Granite Beach. ALL athletes must wear their race number on the front of their body during the run and have it when crossing the finish line. 4-mile run map

The 2-mile run course leaves transition and runs on crushed granite path trails and single track trails combined with a little pavement before the aid station at the half-way point and then returns on similar terrain. 2-mile run map

Transition Area

The Transition area will be on a first-come basis, with the exception of Reserved Bike Racks for TRI Clubs. The transition area at all TBF Racing events is for athletes only. All non-athletes must remain outside of the transition area at all times on race day. Body marking will be take place at the entrance to the transition area and must be completed before you enter the transition area. Athletes will have their race number marked on their legs and arms and have their age division on their calf. Glass or bottles are not allowed in the transition area.

Aid Stations

Aid stations will be located in the transition area and at miles 1, 2,.3 and 5 on the run course, serving cold water, CLIF Gel Shots, and Electrolyte beverage.


Expected water temperature for Folsom Lake will be 54-62 degrees. Wetsuits are recommended. Swim fins and snorkels are not allowed. Helmets must be worn and buckled on the bike at all times. Run numbers must be worn on the run and when crossing the finish line. Listening devices of any kind: MP3, IPod, headphones, etc… are not allowed.

Wave Starts

The Ice Breaker Dash Super Sprint Triathlon & Duathlon will start at 8 am with TWO waves, each 3 minutes apart.

Wave One Men and Women 39 and under
Wave Two Men and Women 40+ and Athena, Clydesdale athletes

ICE Breaker Triathlon will start at 9 am. There will be Five waves, each 3 minutes apart.

Wave One Men 34 and under
Wave Two Men 35-49
Wave Three Men 50+ and Clydesdale athletes
Wave Four Women 34 and under
Wave Five Women 35+, Athena athletes and Relay Teams

The wave start times and the age groups in each wave will be posted at Registration and the start area on race morning.

All finishers will receive a custom Finisher Medal.

First place Overall Male and Female in the ICE Breaker Triathlon will receive Overall Champion Awards. There will be awards five deep in each five-year age group for the ICE Breaker Triathlon. Relay Team awards will be for the Top three teams in each Division of Male, Female and Coed.

First place Overall Male and Female in the Ice Breaker Dash Super Sprint Triathlon andSuper Sprint Duathlon will receive Overall Champion Awards. There will be awards three deep in each ten-year age group for the Ice Breaker Dash Super Sprint Triathlon and Duathlons.

Refund and transfer policy

TBF Racing has a no refund policy on all of our events. A refund requested prior to race week will be given a TBF Race credit for the amount of the entry fee minus a $25 processing fee. Credits are not given during race week. Transfers are allowed from one TBF Racing event to another within a one-year time frame. There is a $25 transfer fee. Transfers are not allowed during race week. ALL TBF Racing events are held rain or shine.

Competitor Goodies

Included for each competitor is an ICE Breaker Triathlon tech-tee race shirt, ICE Breaker Shoulder bag, XTERRA swim cap, athlete goody bag with CLIF Bar, RedBull and Emerald Nuts product samples.

Post Race Athlete Food

Included for each competitor is a post race meal of hot pasta with salad, fruit, cookies and beverage.

Training and Coaching:

TBF Training provides group workouts and coaching for the sport of Triathlon along with individual Multi-sport Coaching and Personal Training.

Race for FREE program

Our Race for FREE Athlete Volunteer Program offers a chance to get involved with multi-sport events, have fun, and earn a $40 TBF Racing Volunteer voucher good towards entry fees at any of our events this year. Each volunteer shift is 4 hours. We ask volunteers to reserve a volunteer position at any of our events by emailing as our volunteer positions will fill up quickly.
